The other day Steve Jobs posted his “thoughts on Flash” on apple.com and having read his article I felt compelled to rant a little. First let me just borrow his conclusion for a second: Conclusions.
Flash was created during the PC era – for PCs and mice. Flash is a successful business for Adobe, and we can understand why they want to push it beyond PCs. But the mobile era is about low power devices, touch interfaces and open web standards – all areas where Flash falls short. The avalanche of media outlets offering their content for Apple’s mobile devices demonstrates that Flash is no longer necessary to watch video or consume any kind of web content. And the 200,000 apps on Apple’s App Store proves that Flash isn’t necessary for tens of thousands of developers to create graphically rich applications, including games. New open standards created in the mobile era, such as HTML5, will win on mobile devices (and PCs too). Perhaps Adobe should focus more on creating great HTML5 tools for the future, and less on criticizing Apple for leaving the past behind. Steve Jobs April, 2010
No really, I agree with every thing he said and even on stuff I did not know until today. And I don’t easily “swallow” everything Jobs say, but I have to say I wholeheartedly agree with him on this one.
A few things I think he left out though, is the loading times that comes with using flash, and the often contra-intuitive menus. (｀ヘ´)
Its one thing to have a horrible ad banner showing annoying flash to help you pay your server bills, it’s a another thing entirely to build your entire Web sites in flash, like a lot of musicians and movie Web sites do. Even ignoring that it brings your cpu “to its knees”, heats up your computer and sends your computerfans into a screaming frenzy while gulping down whatever is left of your battery, you are still left with the insane load times of these sites, that always leaves me disappointed once they have loaded, and couple that with with what one (1!) webdesigner considers to be an intuitive interface （▼へ▼ﾒ）. And then just imagine those load times on the 3G network *shivers* Σ（ﾟдﾟ；）
Personally I am glad to see that flash will not be coming to the mobile platforms.
♫♬♪ or anywhere else for that matter, good writtens flash ♬♫♪♩ (⌒_⌒)/ (I would like to encourage every one interested in apple to read the entire article on apple.com/hotnews)
